ELECTROENCEPHALOGRAM (EEG)

WHAT IS IT?
This is a study that is often used in the evaluation of seizures, confusion, and other disorders of the brain, and records the electrical waves of the brain. Using a paste, electrodes are applied to the scalp, and your brain’s electrical activity is recorded on a computer. It takes an hour to an hour and a half while you sit comfortably on a recliner.
You will be asked to relax, and avoid unnecessary movements. During certain parts of the test, the technologist may ask you to watch a strobe and/or hyperventilate. These are routine parts of the test that allow better evaluation of the results. There is no electrical stimulation in this test. After the test, the electrodes will be removed, and you may wash the paste out of your hair in our restroom.

HOW DO I PREPARE FOR IT?
Please clean and dry your hair on the morning of the test. This makes it easier for the technologist to apply the electrodes. You may continue your medications unless requested otherwise. In certain situations, you may be requested to limit your sleep on the night before the test to allow you to fall asleep during the test.

DOES IT HURT?
There may be some discomfort while the electrodes are applied to the scalp, but most people tolerate the test without difficulty.
